This strongbox, made of wood, iron, bronze, silver and copper, was made in the first century B.C. Found in the peristyle of the villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius in Oplontis, it is equipped with feet and made of a wooden casing, on which thin sheets of iron were laid—fixed with large studded nails—and made stronger by further reinforcement strips. An ingenious locking mechanism secured the lid.

One of the victims found in this villa, tentatively identified as the owner, carried coinage in the amount of 10,000 sesterces, the largest sum found to date in the Vesuvian region.
