This fresco detail from the House of the Golden Bracelet, painted in the “Third Style” between 30-35 A.D., depicts a garden scene. The fresco was discovered in the course of excavations of the house’s garden, perhaps having been removed from the house after the earthquake of 62 A.D. The dining areas were subsequently redecorated, although with paintings of a quality inferior to this one.
Known to be part of the dining room decoration, this fresco may have decorated the summer triclinium, which opened out onto the villa’s garden. It was not uncommon for wealthy Pompeiians to have more than one dining room, or triclinium. The location of the summer triclinium in this particular villa allowed the owners to dine overlooking the garden and to look out upon the sea beyond.
